MEET THE TEAM

Meet your 2024 NICA Coach Education staff and learn about their experiences and the path that led them to NICA!

NICA's Coach Education team exists to support a network of thousands of volunteer coaches across the country in their work to develop youth through the sport of mountain biking. NICA's comprehensive coach education program and resources provide coaches with the skills, knowledge, and abilities to be confident and effective leaders and role models who build strong minds, bodies, character, and communities through cycling.

In 2024, we’re welcoming several new faces to the team. Meet your Coach Education staff and learn about their experiences and the path that led them to NICA!

Diana Allen: Coach Education Manager – Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Initiatives

Diana, a California native, has been involved with NICA since the inaugural season of the Maryland Interscholastic Cycling League (MICL) in 2018. Diana has served as a level 3 coach, coach supporter, GRiT coordinator, chief course marshal and associate league director. She was responsible for establishing Maryland’s GRiT ambassador program and also founded the state’s first Little Bellas chapter. She served as the Little Bellas Elkridge program lead for 3 years. She is a certified level 2 coach with the Professional Mountain Bike Instructor’s Association and is also a professional bicycle technician. Diana has also been involved in the bicycle industry as a brand ambassador for Liv Cycling and Kona Bicycles. She is currently a member of Revel Bikes Community Collective and a Cane Creek Components sponsored athlete. Diana has experience racing in a wide range of bike disciplines and has raced enduro professionally.

Diana has a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of California, Riverside and M.A. degrees in both Molecular Biology and Secondary Education from Johns Hopkins University. She comes to NICA with 12 years of high school teaching experience and prior military service. Diana has 2 children and continues to reside in Maryland. She is extremely passionate about working with children, empowering people through mountain biking and making the sport more accessible for all people.

Jessica Harmening: Coach Education Manager

Jessica has been coached with NICA since 2018 and joined the West Virginia League as Coach Supporter since 2019. Jess started the Morgantown Trail Hawks in 2018, a team that has grown from 26 student athletes the first year to over 70 student athletes in 2024. In 2021, Jessica was awarded SRAM NICA Coach of the Year Award for her dedication and her work to build positive culture within her team. Jessica comes to NICA with nine years of experience as a middle and high school special educator and over 15 years experience working with youth. Jessica is passionate about experiential education and using the bike as a tool to help kids and adults alike find their best selves.

Jessica has always been a cyclist, but she wasn’t a mountain biker when she began her team eight years ago.  She has grown to be an avid singletrack shredder and loves the solitude of local WV trails at places like  Big Bear Lake and Coopers Rock State Forest. Jessica also serves on a volunteer board for the local forest, and on the board for the West Virginia Mountain Bike Association. When she is not riding bikes, Jessica loves to backpack local trails,  see live music with her fiance Zack, or hang out at home with her dogs Red and Indy.
